Greene Township Receives Keystone Historic Preservation Grant for the Corker Hill Mansion House Restoration

June 26, 2024

Greene Township, Franklin County – The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) awarded Greene Township $26,794 to rehabilitate the Corker Hill Mansion House.

The township will use the funds to restore the interior of the house, including repainting the walls and repairing the floors throughout the first level, bedrooms, stairways, and bathroom.

Corker Hill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, formalizing its significance in American history. It is one of the oldest Federal Style brick structures in Franklin County, making it an important architectural relic. Understanding the site’s significance as a regional historic treasure, the township acquired the property from a private party in 2008. Since taking ownership of the property, the township has maintained its commitment to restoring the site in a way that maintains Corker Hill’s historic accuracy and integrity.

“On behalf of the Township, we would like to thank our state and local officials, and local organizations for their continued support of our restoration efforts,” Township Supervisor Shawn Corwell said. “This funding will truly make a difference for us to continue the improvements that are necessary in order to prepare the mansion house for its intended reuse.”

To date, the township has committed nearly $165,000 towards improvements at the mansion. Previous work included overall site clearing, replacement of the mansion’s roof, restoration of two cupolas, and replacement of roofs on two outbuildings. The township most recently completed the replacement of the mansion’s shutters earlier this year.

The commission awarded 44 grants selected from 113 applications. Grant amounts ranged from $5,000 to $25,000 for planning grants and $5,000 to $100,000 for construction projects. These grants receive funding from the Keystone Recreation, Park, & Conservation Fund. This fund is supported annually from a portion of the state realty transfer tax revenue.
